Mayor
Jim Edwards was elected to the Cerritos City Council
in March 2005. A Cerritos resident for more than 33 years, he previously served as a Cerritos Parks and
Recreation Commissioner from 1988 to 1997 and 2003
to 2005, and as a Cerritos Community Safety
Committee Member from 1997 to 2003.

Mayor Edwards is active in the Cerritos Optimist
Club and Vietnam Veterans Association. His community
involvement also includes serving as president of
the County of Los Angeles Cerritos Regional County
Park Authority from 2000 to 2002, and serving on the
Board of Directors of the American Heart Association
from 1998 to 2001.

Currently Mayor
Edwards is serving on the boards of the Los Cerritos
YMCA, Community Family Guidance and Pathways Hospice.

As a councilmember,
Mayor Edwards serves on the City Council's Cerritos Auto Mall,
Legislative, ABC Unified School District and
Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts Committees. He is
also the chairperson of
the City Council's Budget/Finance and Personnel Committees. Mayor
Edwards is the City Council's delegate to the California
Contract Cities Association, California Joint Powers
Insurance Authority, the Gateway Cities Council of
Governments, the Gateway Cities Council of
Governments – 91/605 Corridor Cities Committee,
League of California Cities/City
Selection/Metropolitan Transportation Authority,
Sanitation Districts 2, 3, 18 and 19/Waste
Management and Southeast Water Coalition.

Mayor Edwards received his bachelor’s degree in
physical education from Whittier College, where he
also earned his teaching
credential. He received a master’s degree in
educational technology from National University.
Mayor Edwards is retired from a 34-year career as a teacher
and administrator. He was a founding teacher at Whitney
Community Learning Center, now Whitney High School
for four years. At Gahr High School for more than 30 years,
Mayor Edwards served as a teacher, athletic
director, guidance counselor and acting vice
principal. While at Gahr, Mayor Edwards also served
as a part-time instructor at Cerritos College and as
director of the Cerritos College Summer Sports Camp.

Mayor Edwards has nearly three decades of experience
in athletics, coaching various varsity sports
including baseball, cross-country, soccer, softball,
and track and field. As athletic director at Gahr High School,
Mayor Edwards served as meet manager for San
Gabriel Valley League (SGVL) cross country and SGVL
track-and-field preliminaries and finals.

He and his wife Connie have a son and daughter,
Scott and Stacy. Mayor Edwards enjoys golfing,
traveling, photography and spending time with his
four grandchildren. |
